ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

Daily Telegraph, 2022

Drone Surveillance

Coastal drone technology has revolutionsed beach safety, allowing lifeguards to easily spot sharks and patrol larger stretches of coastline. This technology provides lifeguards with real-time aerial footage that extends far past flagged areas.

Drone technology plays a crucial role in the accurate identification of sharks. Drone surveillance can identify shark species and size, as well as monitor shark behaviour.

This technology has allowed lifeguards to identify potential dangeous situations and timely evacuate beachgoers from the water when neccesary.

The SharkSmart Drone Program is currently being trialed on 10 Queensland beaches. Current trials have shown drone surveillance to be highly effective in spotting sharks with over 174 sharks observed in Queensland waters in the 2020/2021 drone  trials, leading to 4 evacuation procedures.

Eco Shark Barrier

The Australian-made Eco Shark Barrier provides beachgoers with a fully enclosed swimming area. Unlike current shark nets, the Eco Shark Barrier forms a complete enclosure, providing 100% protection for beach users. The nylon material is anchored on the sea bed  and continues to the surface of the water, stretching along both sides of the beach, created an complete enclosure and fantastic shark deterrent.

The Eco Shark Barrier is made from recycable, durable and flexible components that do not harm or negatively impact passing by marine life. The flexible material has been purposefully designed to not entangled passing-by marine life, with wildlife simply bumping off of the barrier.

The Eco Shark Barrier provides a 100% effective solution, by creating a physical and complete barrier between humans and sharks. The Eco Shark Barrier was first installed at Coogee Beach in Western Australia in 2013.

Personal Deterrent Options

Personal electronic shark deterrents like the SharkBanz or Shark Shield Band have been proven to provide a highly effective 3D protection field around the user. The band emits strong electronic pulses that interfere with the sharks 'sixth sense', the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which is a highly sensitive organ that feels the electronic pulse of its prey.

This personal device can be fitted onto a surfboard, scuba tank or fins when entering the water. This band can also simply be worn on the ankle or wrist.

Personal electronic deterrents have been widely tested in Western Australia, originally being used to avoid depredation for commerical fisheries. This design has been tested for the past 20 years, and has been scientifically proven in successfully deterring sharks.

This alternative does not interefere or harm marine life, and can be worn by any water-user.

Shark Safe Barrier

The Shark Safe Barrier utilise magnetic pipes that have been anchored to the sea floor that mimic a dense kelp forest. The magnetic pipes overwhelm the sharks sensory system, the Ampullae of Lorenzini. Essentially, like shining a flashlight in your eyes, the shark will change course of direction when it comes within a close proximity to the device.

Playing on both visual and magnetic cues, this device has been proven to be highly effective at creating an invisible boundary line for sharks.

The Shark Safe Barrier has been trialed for the past 10 years and is currently the first proven effective and eco-friendly solution to protect humans from sharks, without harming marine life in South Africa.
