Lola and the Deep Blue is an educational childrens book designed to inspire and empower the younger generation to care for our marine environment. This resource aims to provoke questions between the reader and the audience, and spark a crucial conversation starting within the home.
Our mission is to reconnect people with the marine world, to highlight the essential role sharks play in healthy ocean ecosystems, and to inspire a shift—from fear to fascination. We believe that education is the most powerful tool for conservation. Our goal is to make marine conservation accessible, engaging, and impactful for all ages, through innovative conservation strategies, impactful education, and public engagement. We believe that through building a knowledgeable, inspired, and proactive community, we can help protect our blue spaces and support the regeneration of shark populations—not just in Australia, but around the world.
We envision a future where sharks are no longer hunted to extinction, but respected and safeguarded as essential guardians of our oceans. By transforming public attitudes and driving global conservation efforts, BellaBlu Conservation is committed to the preservation of shark species, worldwide.
At BellaBlu Conservation, we’re not just saving sharks. We’re building a future where the ocean and all of its life are valued, protected, and celebrated.
Sharks are vital apex predators, playing a critical role in keeping our oceans healthy and thriving. Yet, they are facing rapid decline, being pushed to the brink of extinction by commercial overfishing, finning, and harmful control methods such as shark nets and baited drumlines. This silent crisis is unfolding off our shores, often unnoticed, despite its far-reaching consequences for ocean life.
Over the past five decades, global populations of oceanic sharks and rays have experienced a significant decline of approximately 71%. Current estimates indicate that between 100 million and 273 million sharks are killed annually worldwide, equating to roughly three sharks being slaughtered each second. If this rate of mortality continues, some scientists warn that certain shark species could face functional extinction by 2040.
Unlike many other fish species, sharks have slow growth rates, late maturity, and produce few offspring, making their populations particularly vulnerable to overexploitation. Their removal from the ecosystem can have long-lasting and potentially irreversible consequences for ocean health and biodiversity, through tropic cascade.
Human interference is rapidly accelerating the sharks demise.
Education can help to promote public safety, through building a deeper understanding of shark behaviour, as well as promoting simple practises to safely share the water. We hope to inspire an educated and knowledgable community that is aware of the important role sharks have, and to support their overall protection.
Building a knowledgable, responsible and informed community through education.
Inspiring the younger generation to protect and care for our blue spaces, starting within the school system.
Moving away from outdated, ineffective and archaic shark protection methods and into a more sustainable future.
